For prepaid meters, the solution will be different depending on how drivers top up their energy account.
Pre-payment meter without an online account: If a driver tops up by taking the physical fob or key to a corner shop or post office, they can onboard, manually enter their tariff kWh unit price rate, and connect their charger to Rightcharge. Since the driver does not have an online energy account, we cannot directly connect to their tariff or make payments to their energy account. Instead, we will calculate the charging costs and provide this information to the business, which will then need to reimburse the driver directly.
We recommend the business provides a float to ensure the driver has sufficient funds to cover the first month of charging.
Pre-payment meter with an online account: For drivers with an online energy account who top up directly via an app or website, they can onboard and connect their tariff and charger to Rightcharge. Once connected, we recommend the business provides a float to cover the first month of charging, as pre-paid accounts may not have sufficient funds initially. Going forward, the process would align with how other direct payment drivers are managed: we would invoice the business for charging costs and send payments directly to the driver’s energy account to cover the charging in arrears. Adjustments for the first month’s charging can also be made based on the initial float.
