Prepayment meters
How prepaid meters are handled depends on how the driver tops up their energy.
Prepayment meter without an online account
This applies when a driver tops up using a physical key or fob at a shop or post office.
How it works:
The driver can onboard to Rightcharge
The driver manually enters their tariff unit rate (pence per kWh)
The charger is connected to Rightcharge
Because there is no online energy account, Rightcharge cannot connect to the tariff or send payments to the energy supplier
What happens next:
Rightcharge calculates the cost of home charging
Charging cost data is provided to the business
The business reimburses the driver directly
Recommendation:
We recommend the business provides a float so the driver has enough credit to cover the first month of charging.
Prepayment meter with an online account
This applies when a driver tops up through an energy supplier app or website.
How it works:
The driver onboards to Rightcharge
The driver connects their energy tariff and charger
A float is also recommended to cover the first month of charging, as prepaid accounts may not have enough credit initially
Ongoing process:
Charging is calculated in the same way as other direct payment drivers
Rightcharge invoices the business for charging costs
Payments are sent directly to the driver’s energy account in arrears
Any adjustments related to the first month can be made against the initial float
